Christmas at Festival Place

Festival PlaceBasingstoke Town Chaplaincy and the churches of Basingstoke got together with Festival Place to provide a week of Christian activity from Monday 19th December to Saturday 24th December. Crafts, storytime, puppets and music took place daily, all on the upper level of Festival Place near BHS.  Throughout the week a Sheep Trail competition was run, with many of the Festival Place shops participating - did you see any of our sheep in the shops!
The week culminated with a live Nativity on Christmas Eve at 11:45am.

July 2011

Presentation to Festival Place Retail Managers

At the end of July the Chaplains did a presentation to the Retail Managers of Festival Place. It was a great opportunity for the managers to see the chaplains and hear what we have to offer to the workforce of Basingstoke.

May 2011

Member of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce

In May the Basingstoke Town Chaplaincy became a member of the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce. This organisation provides leadership and support to the Hampshire business community. It is owned and led by its membership comprising of local business organisations of all sectors and sizes. As a private sector, not for profit Company they are independent and can therefore lobby effectively to make Hampshire the place to do business. It is hoped that membership of this organisation will aid the Chaplaincy in networking with local businesses, raise the Chaplaincy profile and help us be more informed in supporting the workers of Basingstoke.

Christmas at Festival Place!

The churches of Basingstoke have been given a fantastic opportunity to promote the Christmas Story at Festival Place this year. Our Lead Chaplain, Revd. Mandy Bowskill and a team of volunteers heralding from a range of churches in Basingstoke are currently in negotiations with the management of Festival Place. The churches are invited to present a week long mixture of activities during the week of 19th - 24th December to share the wonderful news of Jesus' birth with the thousands of shoppers. This is also a great opportunity for the churches of Basingstoke to work together and promote Christianity and the wealth of variety in our churches to the people of Basingstoke and its visitors. Mandy and her team are keen to hear from anyone who would like to join us in this venture. Current plans include daily themed craft workshops and characters to help the Christmas story unfold. Music and entertainment is planned from local groups and even a puppet team!

If you want to be involved, can spare some time, or have a talent that would work well for this event then please get in touch with Mandy. Contact Mandy at the Chaplaincy office on 01256 842232 or email here.

Good Bye Julie!

With sadness we said goodbye to Julie Evans, one of our most longstanding and highly respected Chaplains. Julie has been a regular and well liked visitor to many retail outlets in Festival Place in her capacity as Basingstoke Town Chaplain over the past few years. During that time she has built up good relationships with many of the workers and provided a listening ear or helpful hand to many more. Julie has moved to Wales to be closer to her family. We send her our prayers and best wishes for the future.

If you feel drawn to joining our Chaplaincy team, then please call us on 01256 842232 or email here. Mandy, our Lead Chaplain would be pleased to talk to you and discuss in detail what is involved.

April 2011

Over 55's Forum

Our Lead Chaplain, Revd. Mandy Bowskill was guest speaker at the Over 55's Forum at Carnival Hall in April. The forum participates in local affairs and promotes the views of the over 55's in the Borough. The forum found the presentation enlightening and interesting and were greatly heartened by the Chaplains commitment to help and care for the people of the town.

Good Friday Walk of Witness

Walk of WitnessThe Chaplains were out in force at the annual Good Friday Walk of Witness as they joined hundreds of Christians in the town centre. The Walk started with a service at the London Street URC  before proceeding silently through the town to culminate in an open-air service in St Michael's churchyard. Chaplains assisted in readings at the services and with the stewarding along the Walk. It proved a powerful witness to the town and it was encouraging to see the number of workers from the shops and passers by that stopped to watch.

February 2011

North Hants Expo

In February one of our chaplains, Revd. Bob Bowskill, attended the North Hants Business Expo at the Anvil. This event is an opportunity for businesses within the region to network, promote their business and strengthen their presence in the region. Bob made some very positive contacts which we are now pursuing.

Away Day with Richard Chewter

During February we had our first Chaplaincy Away Day at Hunters Lodge in Padworth Common. We were very fortunate to have Richard Chewter as our leader for the day. Richard heads up the Watford Town Chaplaincy and is founder of the Street Angels, Watford. Richard proved to be an inspirational speaker and encouraged the team in their vision for the town in the future.

New office opened by Mayor

Chaplains with mayor

Despite the very difficult weather conditions our two launch days were well attended. The Mayor of Basingstoke Cllr Keith Chapman officially opened the offices in May Place on 2nd December 2010.  Several church and community leaders braved the harsh conditions on the Friday and joined us for coffee and a chat during the day.

All are very welcome to call in and see us at any time on a Tuesday or Thursday morning – the kettle is usually on!
